If your mornings sound like a broken record ("shoes on... SHOES ON... where are your shoes?"), a visual routine chart might be the simplest change you make this year.
Why picture routines work
Young children can't hold a long list of instructions in their heads, and they don't read yet. A picture chart shows them what comes next, so they can check it themselves instead of waiting to be told. That builds independence, cuts down the nagging, and gives kids a genuine sense of pride: I did it by myself.
Visual schedules are widely used by teachers and occupational therapists, and many families find them especially helpful for kids who thrive on predictability or find transitions hard.
What to put on a morning routine chart
- Go to the toilet
- Get dressed
- Eat breakfast
- Brush teeth
- Make bed
- Shoes on
- Pack bag
For toddlers, start with 3-4 steps. School-age kids can handle 6-8.
What to put on a bedtime routine chart
- Bath or shower
- Pyjamas on
- Brush teeth
- Toilet
- Story time
- Cuddles
- Lights out
Keeping the same order every night is the secret. The routine itself becomes the cue for sleep.
How to set it up (10 minutes)
- Involve your child. Let them help choose the steps or the order. Kids follow plans they helped make.
- Put it at their eye level, where the routine happens: bathroom, bedroom door, fridge.
- Laminate it and use a whiteboard marker so you can tick and wipe each day.
- Point, don't nag. Swap "brush your teeth!" for "what's next on your chart?".
Should you use rewards?
Rewards can help get a new routine started. A simple star chart works well: a star for each completed routine, and a small reward after a streak (choosing dinner, a trip to the park, extra story time). Celebrate effort and streaks, not perfection, and phase the rewards out once the routine becomes habit.
Potty training charts
The same idea works for toilet training: a tick or sticker every time they try, with lots of praise. Keep it low-pressure and positive.
